What a delight to receive a photo of the Russian hockey championship game in Finland taken by the former President and now the Prime Minister of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev. Mr. Medvedev is an accomplished amateur photographer and loves to play around with photoshop, too.
Congratulations to the Russian hockey team on their victory as new world champions!
It was Russia’s third championship title since 2008 as the Russian hockey team breezed their way past Slovakia in the 2012 IIHF World Championships. With a final score of 6 to 2, the Russian team went undefeated in the championship by beating out defending champion Finland to become the new world hocket champion. The championship series was held in Helsinki.
It is tradition for the winning team to put the victory cup into use right away…as a giant team cup for champagne in locker-room. As part of the achievement Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (on the Russian team) was awarded a gold medal and tournament MVP honors.
Russian President Putin called the team to congratulate them on the victory. Unlike neighboring Belarus where the president/dictator actually suits up to play with the team, Mr. Putin watched the championship series on television.
The team dedicated their victory to локомотив (Locomotive), the hockey team from Yaroslavl, Russia. The entire team was killed in a plane crash in September 2011.
