Just when you thought Spring was around the corner a blanket of snow hit Moscow resulting in gigantic traffic jams due to poor visibility and snowdrifts. Police estimate that length of traffic jams to be more than 3,400 kilometers long. That is the distance from Moscow to the Siberian capital of Novosibirsk.
So far the fresh snow has caused over 2,000 car accidents of which 36 have resulted in over 40 injuries and two deaths. The city administration estimates more than 11,000 snow cleaning machines are in operation and urge city residents to take public transport.
Moscow has a humid continental climate with warm and humid summers and long, cold winters.
