The Russian government will mobilize 70,000 police officers and over 9,000 Interior Ministry OMOH troops for today’s June 12 holiday when opposition groups plan rallies in central Moscow and around the country,
According to the Interior Ministry about 1.35 million citizens are expected to attend 1,550 “political, cultural and other mass” events around the country on the Russia Day holiday, in a statement published on the Interior Ministry website.
Hinting at the authoritarian crackdown expected by Russia’s old-new president, the website warned that “rallies, processions and other activities related to public expression of his opinions by citizens, will be governed by the new federal law on June 8, 2012 N 65-FZ ‘On Amendments to the Code of the Russian Federation on Administrative and Federal Law On Assemblies, Rallies, Demonstrations, Processions and Picketing.’
In accordance with the amendments to the regulatory framework, the participants in disguise, for example, will be immediately detained by the police. Organizers will bear financial responsibility for an offense relating to the application harm to the health of citizens, organization of illegal traffic floors, damage to roads and property damage.“
